Tesco interview guide
Tesco is the UK’s biggest supermarket, with large Extra and Superstore sites, Express convenience stores and distribution centres. Most store jobs are customer assistant roles covering tills, shelves, online orders and counters, with lots of part-time and weekend shifts.
What Tesco values
Tesco publishes three values, and its careers pages use them to describe how colleagues work:
No one tries harder for customers
Putting customers first, even when it means going the extra step.
We treat people how they want to be treated
Tesco links this to a culture of trust and respect between colleagues.
Every little help makes a big difference
Doing small things well, every day, for customers, colleagues and the local community.
What to show at your interview
- A real example of helping a customer when it wasn’t strictly your job.
- That you treat colleagues with respect and get on with a busy team.
- That small things matter to you: a tidy shelf, a friendly hello, getting an order right.
- Honesty about your availability, including evenings and weekends.
Questions you might be asked
Every interview is different. These are typical questions for Tesco roles, matched to what they say they look for.
- Tell me about a time you went out of your way to help a customer.
- How would you deal with a customer who is upset because an item is out of stock?
- Give an example of when you helped a colleague who was struggling.
- What does “every little help makes a big difference” mean to you?
- How do you stay friendly and quick when the store is very busy?
